Search engine optimization’s “big daddy,” Google, turned 13 this week. In case you missed the home page’s latest birthday “doodle,” here it is.
We got a bit of a kick out of the exclamation point on the cake. It hearkens back to the old days (pre-millennium), when that Yahoo-esque punctuation was part of the Google logo. SEO and PPC were still in their infancy, and Social Media Marketing was a mere zygote.
We also like Google’s Claymation-style graphic (remember Gumby and Rankin/Bass?), though not for purely nostalgic reasons. However, we’re here to talk about making SEO, web design and online advertising work for you.
Like Claymation, part of the recipe for successful Internet marketing is making your website, blog and social media pages stickier – i.e., a destination that people will visit, re-visit and recommend to others. We’re talking about pure, good web design, strategic planning, web content writing, and the myriad other SEO tips and advice you need for your business.
From a content standpoint, here are five goals you should keep in mind:
-
Creating a clean, easy-to-navigate website design
-
Updating your content as frequently as possible
-
Not being afraid to personalize what you post to blogs and social media – personal and business anecdotes are a good way to engage people
-
Making content scannable – create shorter sentences and paragraphs, include graphics whenever possible, bullet your main points, and break up blocks of text with headlines
-
Ensuring that relevant keywords phrases are a part of every piece of content that you post online
Of course, like any precocious teenager, Google refuses to make things easy on anybody. With some of their algorithms – such as keywords – you get punished for too much as much as too little. Contact us here at SEM Zen if you’re in need of any Internet marketing advice.
